Congratulations goes out to the 1988-92 NZU and 1989-98 Otago representative Ray Fitiao, for picked up a well deserved NZRL Distinguished Service Award last Wednesday at the NZRL AGM. Since 1985 Ray has been a member of his beloved Otago University Club, which in 2004 recognised him by electing him as its third life member. A powerfully built prop, Ray played 200 premier games for the OU premier side with his last playing appearance being the classic and highly dramatic 1999 Grand Final, which saw his side win in the second period of extra time. As well as proving his worth on the field, Ray has put plenty of hard work off it, such as holding the role of Club President, Club Captain, fundraiser, mentor, and other roles. His best known job however has been as coach and under his watch, has seen his side pick up four premier titles. This year he added a new title to his huge league CV by being elected Chairman of the Otago Rugby League. A teacher by profession and a friend to all, Rays contribution to Otago University, Otago and NZU league is a fine example who has given selfless dedication through the good and the bad as a result of demonstrating that pure passion will overcome any troubles, no matter how tough the times get. Congratulations Chief and we look forward to many more years of your contribution towards the greatest game of all.
