Congratulations to Irfan Siddiq OBE on his appointment as the British Ambassador to Azerbaijan. This is an important and welcome appointment. Mr Siddiq is known in London for his principled stance on human rights and democracy. In his previous role he headed the FCO Arab Partnership Department, in effect managing UK response to the Arab Spring. And of course we know it was Mr Siddiq who sounded the alarm over possible British collusion in CIA rendition flights, back in 2006. I hope his appointment will strengthen Azerbaijani-British relations and focus UK engagement on human rights and democracy promotion.
