Congratulations to Prof. Stefan Hell, Director of the Max Planck Institute for Biophysical Chemistry in Göttingen (Germany) who has been awarded the Nobel Prize for Chemistry 2014, together with two scientists from the USA. Professor Hell has developed a method using laser beams to obtain high-resolution images of molecules, which is being used for advanced medical research. Nanotechnologies depend on the manipulation of materials at the level of atoms and molecules, with a size smaller than 100 nanometres (i.e. less than 0.0001 millimetres). The European Standardization Committee (CEN) is working with ISO - International Organization for Standardization to identify and develop standards in relation to nanotechnologies and nanomaterials. The CEN Technical Committee on Nanotechnologies (CEN/TC 352) is responsible for coordinating standardization activities at European level. For more information, please see the CEN website ...
