Congratulations to RIM Architects and the rest of the design team (of which BBFM Engineers was a member) for the AIA Alaska Honor Award for the Samuel Simmonds Memorial Hospital Project in Barrow. From the jury: This hospital is an outstanding example of conducting design research and developing a sensitive site design to deliver an outstanding building in the harsh environment of one of the world’s northernmost communities. The jury was impressed with the architects’ success in creating a landmark without overwhelming the scale of the surrounding community. The jury also was impressed with the interiors of this project. The architect successfully incorporated native elements from the surrounding region while also creating a modern and welcoming aesthetic. The use of wood textures and ample natural light (when available) prevent the building from feeling clinical and give patients and visitors a connection to the outdoors.
