(From) Writers Federation of Nova Scotia 2014 East Coast Literary Awards Shortlists Announced Halifax, NS – The Writers’ Federation of Nova Scotia (WFNS) is proud to announce the shortlist for the 2014 East Coast Literary Awards. At the Nook on Gottingen, Sylvia Gunnery and Jonathan Meakin, President and Executive Director of WFNS respectively, revealed the names of nine writers in the running for the following Awards: J. M. Abraham Poetry Award: Mary Dalton (NL), Hooking (Signal Editions) Don Domanski (NS), Bite Down Little Whisper (Brick Books) Sue Goyette (NS), Ocean (Gaspereau Press) Evelyn Richardson Non-Fiction Award: John DeMont (NS), A Good Day’s Work (Doubleday) Richard Foot (NS), Driven (Goose Lane) Stephen Kimber (NS), What Lies Across the Water (Fernwood) Thomas Raddall Atlantic Fiction Award: Shashi Bhat (NS), The Family Took Shape (Cormorant Books) Ed Kavanagh (NL), Strays (Killick Press) William Kowalski (NS), The Hundred Hearts (Dundurn) The East Coast Literary Awards celebrate and promote excellence in writing from Canada’s Atlantic region. Award jurors had the unenviable task of deliberating 64 submitted titles by writers from all four Atlantic provinces in order to select the nine finalists. “Each year, the success of our Awards program is a testament to the diversity and quality of writing from our region,” said Gunnery. “This year’s finalists introduce local, national, and international readers to remarkable works written by Atlantic Canadians and published in 2013.” Full details of shortlisted titles and their authors will be available by Tuesday, June 10 on the WFNS website writers.ns.ca. Winners will be announced at the East Coast Literary Awards presentation in Halifax on September 20, following a series of public events and readings celebrating the shortlisted writers. Established in 1976, the Writers’ Federation of Nova Scotia works to provide advice and assistance to writers at all stages of their careers; to encourage greater public recognition of writers and their achievements; and to enhance the literary arts in our regional and national culture.
