Congratulations to all who passed the bar exam today! I remember clicking refresh, over and over and over and over... This is also a fun time because I typically swear in many new lawyers. But thats not all I do; the process and back story is interesting and historical too. A few years ago I was presented by the Judge White with the American Judicial Alliance with a Harlan Bible. In 1906, Justice John Marshall Harlan gave his own Bible to the Supreme Court of the United States. It has become known as the “Harlan Bible” and is maintained by the Court’s Curator. Since its presentation, the Harlan Bible’s flyleaf pages have been signed by every justice in succession shortly after taking the oath of office. Many talk about the tradition, history and awe of signing it. Additionally, all Harlan Bibles have May 1st inscribed on them - National Law Day. Tomorrow, groups around the country will honor the law and our profession. So in honor of my own Harlan Bible, which I will gladly pass along to my successor, there are signatures of many recent law graduates and even Judge Catherine Evans who I was blessed to swear in. If you know a law grad who is ready to take the oath, I am happy to oblige and would love to pass along the tradition of the Harlan Bible.
