Congratulations to my son Christian. He was sidelined this past April with a jones fracture for 5 months. You have worked so hard, and I am so proud of you. He is the 2nd leading scorer in the city, and he scored 40 in a game this past weekend in the Kruel Classic, and was selected on the All tournament team. Stay humble, stay focused, and follow your dreams !!! You were born to be great !!! I love you !!! Article on Christian : Florida checks in on in-state junior Russ Wood InsidetheGators Staff Talk about it in Alligator Alley 0 0 When college coaches visit Jacksonville, Florida in search of high major basketball talent they typically stop by Arlington Country Day or Potters House Christian Academy; they seldom stop by Bishop Kenny High School. That may be about to change. This past Saturday Florida Gators assistant coach Matt McCall was spotted at Williston High School to scout some of the games in the annual Mighty Ike Shootout. One of the players that caught his attention was Bishop Kenny junior Christian Carlyle. The 6-foot-4, 193-pound guard had a strong sophomore season and Saturday afternoon at Williston High School he put on a show scoring 29 points, grabbing six rebounds and dishing four assists in a 56-55 loss to Gainesville Eastside. Carlyle did most of his damage at the rim in the first half, beating defenders off the bounce and finishing with either hand. When Eastside tried to take that away, Carlyle started hitting pull up jumpers, or creating for his teammates who hed hit with an on target pass for them to score. He has a solid enough handle that Bishop Kenny head coach Jerry Buckley used Carlyle as a primary ball handler at times against Eastsides press. Defensively, he has good anticipation and tips or deflects several passes a game often leading to steals and fast breaks for his team. Coach McCall was impressed with his overall feel for the game, coach Buckley said of Carlyle. Eastside is a very good defensive team but they were not able to rattle him. Carlyle was happy and surprised coach McCall was seated at mid-court watching him play. He (McCall) came to watch me play at open gym one time, but this was his first time watching me in a game, Carlyle said. It meant a lot to me because I am a big Gator fan and love the program. The junior told us that coach McCall invited him to a game and Carlyle said he might be attending the January 3 game against Connecticut. Carlyle also told us that the Gators might watch him again soon. He (McCall) said Coach Donovan is going to try to watch me play next week at the Kreul Classic. Holding an offer from North Florida, Carlyle is also getting interest from George Washington, FGCU, UCF and East Carolina. Even still, his recruitment has been relatively quiet due in large part to suffering a broken bone in his foot in the third game of the first official event of the AAU season in April that kept him off the court during the crucial July evaluation period. As a sophomore, Carlyle averaged 19.4 points and 4.9 rebounds per game while leading Bishop Kenny to a 21-9 record and a trip to the 2014 Class 5A Regional Finals where they fell to Rutherford. Though his secret is out regionally, he could become a more sought after recruit with a strong showing the rest of this season and on the circuit. Its safe to say Christian Carlyle is on the Gators radar and the Florida staff will be paying close attention.
