Congratulations to the fabulous cast of "Of Mice and Men", a brilliant write up in the gazette today, very well deserved. ********************* Of Mice and Men Lowther Pavilion John Steinbeck’s 1937 novel was converted into an acclaimed stage play within six months and has attracted some top actors to the pivotal roles of George and Lennie ever since. In the newly formed Centre Stage’s first play Tony Lancaster and Chris Campbell are superb individually and even more so together. Lancaster, all fast-talking nervous energy, is a splendid foil to the softly-spoken and touching vulnerability of Campbell. The scenes where they look forward mystically to a time and a place where Lennie can look after his own rabbits capture brilliantly the longing to escape from the toil and drifting of rural California in the 1930s. George’s passion and Lennie’s wonderment result from their spot on physical acting as much as from their words. Director Lynda Clarkson and lighting designer Ben Rooney achieve a pleasing intimacy by setting the action in three areas right across the floor of the auditorium, though sightlines are a difficulty for some. In a strong supporting cast Ian Edmundson, Jay Gaskell and Des Grant stand out, but the acclaim of a very substantial audience at the curtain call was principally for George and Lennie, the original odd couple, if ever there was one. A magnificent performance of a memorable play. Julian Wilde
