Congress is a mess. Theres too much politics and too much party-first thinking. Two studies released this week confirmed that I rank near the ideological middle in a House that has been sharply divided by partisan differences. Im proud to be an independent voice who ranked fourth among independent-minded Members of Congress. Ive voted against party leadership about 35 percent of the time while working across party lines to break through Washington gridlock. The Arizona Republics article said that Im one of the few members who bucked their own party leaders on a relatively high number of votes cast last year. I work with Republicans and Democrats to get things done for the people of Southern Arizona because that’s the right thing to do. Political party is less important than rebuilding our middle class.
