Conservatives and Texas taxpayers scored a huge victory this week with the announcement that a $1.4 million settlement has been obtained against Planned Parenthood Gulf Coast over allegations of Medicaid fraud. This settlement came as the result of a lawsuit filed by a whistleblower. Currently, Texas law only allows these kinds of whistleblower lawsuits (called "qui tam" lawsuits) in cases involving Medicaid fraud. So-called "tort reform" groups such as "Texans For Lawsuit Reform" have fought attempts by the legislature in recent years to allow these kinds of whistleblower lawsuits in cases involving fraud against any part of state government, not just Medicaid.
