Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything." (James 1:2-4 NIV) The young woman is deeply troubled. Her neat little world is unravelling and crumbling. She is deeply distressed and goes to her chef father for counsel. She pours her woes to him. After listening for a while, he says nothing but goes to his burner and puts three pots with water to boil with a carrot in one, an egg in the other and coffee in the last one. He is silent as the water boils. Upon boiling he removed the carrot which is now soft, the egg which is now hard and smells the aroma of the coffee filling the room. Dumbfounded the daughter asks, "Dad, what are you doing?". Her father replies, " My dear daughter, I am teaching your about life. Trials and troubles come upon every person. Some people are hard and tough like a carrot but they become soft and weak when trouble strikes. Others are soft and tender like an egg but they become but scarred and hardened by trouble. Others are like coffee; they become better with a rich refreshing aroma emanating from them when the troubles of life strike. My daughter, the choice is yours." Trials and storms will come upon everyone of us...the choice of whether we will be like the carrot, the egg or the coffee is ours!
