Consider that the person who always seems to be defensive about things. That just perhaps they have felt attacked verbally most or all of their life...and they have just come to expect people to attack them verbally. And perhaps no one ever stood up for them. So they feel that they have to always defend themselves. Perhaps they are just so used to and tired of no one listening to them. So they just want someone to hear them.
