"Consistent new emerging evidence suggests that hyperglycemia can leave an early imprint in cells of the vasculature and of target organs, favoring the future development of complications. Additionally, evidence suggests that this “memory” can appear even when good control of glycemia is achieved. This phenomenon has been named as “metabolic memory” (Nathan et al., 2005).
