Constipation : A very common disturbance within the digestive tract, it restricts regular bowel movement. Since improper stool produces toxins (ama) which find their way into the blood stream and are then carried to all parts of the body, in chronic cases this problem can give way to serious diseases as rheumatism, arthritis, piles, high blood pressure and even cancer. Symptoms : - Infrequency, irregularity or difficulty in eliminating hard faecal matter - Coated tongue - Foul breath - Loss of appetite - Headaches - Dizziness - Dark circles under the eye - Depression - Nausea - Pimples - Mouth ulcers - Diarrhea alternating with constipation - Varicose veins - Pain in the lumbar region - Acidity - Heart burn - Insomnia Root Causes : - Improper diet & irregular eating habits - Insufficient intake of water and high fibre food. - Excessive intake of animal protein - Irritable colon - Spastic colitis - Emotional disturbances - Lack of physical activity - Paralytic or mechanical obstruction to the passage of stools. Household remedies : * Include fruits like papaya, mango, banana, grapes, oranges, apple etc in daily menu. * Carefully chew your food. * Avoid spicy, frozen food items, food items that have preservatives. * Avoid overcooked, refrigerated, preserved or canned food. * Replace refined starch food items with whole grain food items. * Food prepared with cumin seeds, coriander, turmeric and fennel as condiments are easily digested. * Avoid stressful conditions. * Squat for 10 minutes in the morning and preferably while eliminating. * Make going to toilet early in the morning a habit. * Fast a day per week. * Don’t wear very tight belt. * Practice yoga- beneficial in strengthening colon, promoting appetite and facilitating digestion. * Take a glass of warm milk before going to bed. * Drink lemon juice prepared in warm water during the day. * Add half a teaspoon honey to half cup of water and drink it three times a day. * Early in the morning drink plenty of warm water, walk for half an hour. * Eat plenty of bananas (small) and drink lot of water throughout the day. * Take Triphala with honey or warm water. * Drink lot of water daily. * Eat fruits (banana, papaya, pineapple, etc.) * Follow daily exercise regime. * Sip warm water little by little in the morning. * Opt fiber foods.
