Construction is set to begin Monday, April 7 on the installation of four miles of upgraded, continuous sidewalks along NY Route 25A/Main Street through downtown Riverhead. The $2.1 million project includes reconstructing the deteriorated sidewalks with ramps and amenities in compliance with American with Disabilities Act (ADA) requirements. The NYSDOT project features include reconstructing the deteriorated NY Route 25/Main Street sidewalks, as well as constructing new sidewalks in the gaps that now exist eastbound and westbound between Griffing and Union Avenues, and between River Road and Center Street in the westbound direction. New benches, trash receptacles and bike racks are also being provided. In cooperation with the Town of Riverhead, new decorative lighting provided by the Town will be installed. In addition, dead or decayed trees are being removed and replaced and new porous ADA compliant pavement for the tree pits is being installed. The aesthetically pleasing porous pavement allows water and nutrients to reach the trees as if they were planted in open soil. Construction is scheduled to begin, weather permitting, on Monday on the north side of NY Route 25/Main Street and proceed east to west. Access to businesses will be maintained. No travel lanes will be closed during the day and construction will progress using the shoulder and parking lanes. No parking will be permitted along shorter sections of Main Street during certain stages of construction. Construction may take place during off-peak night time hours to minimize the impact on businesses.
