Consumers?? Is that all they think we are?? Were CANADIAN CITIZENS! Consumers stay away in droves from 4 byelections If politics can be seen as a business, low voter turnout in this weeks four byelections suggests a high level of consumer disenchantment. We also may be seeing faint signs of citizen-consumer fatigue with political advertising and branding. Conservatives tried to haul out attack ads against Liberal leader Justin Trudeau in Scarborough-Agincourt during the byelection, and were rewarded with a five-percentage-point drop in support from their 2011 results in that riding. Attack ads overall are simply proving to be less effective against Trudeau than they were with his predecessors. Is that because Trudeau is a different kind of politician? Or could it be that Canadians have just grown tired of the blunter tools of consumer politics? Similarly, for all those efforts to recast the country’s history and heroes in a more Conservative blue, the government’s own polls keep showing that Canadians still admire Pierre Trudeau, David Suzuki and the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. It must be frustrating to those who persist in seeing Canadians as passive consumers of politics and democracy. These customers are not being swayed by ads, their culture is not easily rebranded and they have higher expectations of government than mere bargains and slogans. And when it comes to voting, they are becoming the most feared type of customers. The kind who don’t show up. thestar/news/insight/2014/07/04/consumers_stay_away_in_droves_from_4_byelections.html
