Consumers around Norfolk are continuing to report that they have been caught out by misleading ‘free’ trial offer scams. ‘Free trial’ offers often involve food supplements which supposedly have medical benefits, including the chance to lose weight quickly and easily. Increasing numbers of reports relate to free trials of raspberry ketone and related products for slimming. Nutrition and health claims for food supplements are strictly regulated, and these claims can only be made if they appear on the EU register of claims. No such claims are approved for raspberry ketone, and there is no evidence that the products have any effect on weight loss in humans. For more information, see this useful summary at WebMD, who say that: “…spending money on expensive ketone supplements amounts to little more than wishful thinking…” if you have responded to the offer and have a contact address within the European Union you can also get advice and report the trader to the UK European Consumer Centre at ukecc.net or by telephone on 08456 04 05 03. The European Consumer Centre offers free consumer advice and support to consumers residing in the EU who are buying goods or services from traders based in other EU countries.
