SPECIAL QUESTION no 297: We find that there exists a practice amongst Hindus of tonsuring their heads as an offering to God in the temple. What does this signify? Sri Sri Muralidhara swamiji: If we browse through the pages of History, we find that when the husband died the wife was also pushed into the same funeral pyre. Many social reformers, such as Rajaram Mohan Roy, fought against the social evil. In those days, a widow would tonsure her head to symbolically show that she had ended her life after the death of her husband. In Mahabharata, we find an interesting incident which is relevant in this context. Arjuna vows that he will slay Ashwathama who killed Draupadi’s children. Draupadi, on the other hand says that it is a grave sin to kill the son of the Guru. (Dronacharya, the father of Ashwathama was Arjuna’s Guru) “How will I fulfill my vow if I do not kill Ashwathama?” He asks. Bhagavan Sri.Krishna offers a wonderful solution to Arjuna. “Remove the hair from Ashwathama’s head. That amounts to taking his life.” Advises Sri Krishna. When a monk renounces the world in spiritual pursuits it marks the beginning of a new life for him. This is the reason why he tonsures his head to symbolize the end of his previous life. To put in nut shell, the point that is made by the aforesaid illustrations is that offering the hair from one’s head is equivalent to offering one’s life. Therefore, when a devotee tonsures his head in the temple, he symbolically offers his entire life to God. !!!
