Continuing in the benarsi bandwagon is another radiant belle... Reena looks eye-catching in this benarsi, she has picked from mogra. Her benarsi is in matka silk. Matka is a rough handloom silk fabric made from very thick yarns spun out of pierced cocoon in the weft and organzine in warp. The yarns are obtained from short ends of silk from Mulberry silkworms and spun by hand without removing the gum. As such, there are irregularities that give the fabric a unique character. Matka silk is 100% pure silk. Located on the Ganges River, the city of Bhagalpur is known as Silk City. By the 7th century, Bhagalpur was recognized as a trading hub, though the silk industry is barely 200 years old. Matka silk is woven in the region.
