Continuing my list of Top 10 Favorite Horror Films from the Last 5 Years, I havent reviewed my number-seven choice yet, so Ill say a few things about it right here. 7. Oculus This is a film about a brother and sister who have had a tragic incident happen in their childhood that the sister believes a possessed mirror is responsible for. But while the sister runs an experiment that she hopes will kill the beast inside the mirror, the brother, who has spent the past 10 years in a mental institution, doesnt believe in it at all. But it doesnt take too long before sinister things start to happen during the experiment... Whats really effective about Oculus is that its lean on scares and heavy on psychological tension. The film is more concerned with making us nervous with suspense than just shocking us with jump-scares. The mirror has a way of messing with peoples minds so that you can do things you have no memory of or even have a different perception of reality. Were just as confused as the characters are about whats real and whats not. The film is smart at not providing simple answers. Its chilling, its well-made, its well-acted, its destined to be a new horror classic.
