Continuing my review of the Golden Decade of Music 1965-1974, where I am selecting the artists alphabetically and playing selections of their songs I liked or found influential from that Golden Decade. I am now moving into the D’s and on to the next artist, The Doors, a band formed in 1965 in Los Angeles, consisting of Jim Morrison, Ray Manzarek, John Densmore and Robby Krieger. The Doors released eight albums between 1967 and 1971. All but one hit the Top 10 of the Billboard 200 and went platinum or better. Although the Doors active career ended in 1973, their popularity has persisted; according to the RIAA, they have sold over 100 million records worldwide and were ranked #41 in the Rolling Stone list of the greatest artists of all time. The next song I am selecting is Riders on the Storm, a song with writing credit given to The Doors collectively that appeared on their 197’1 album, L.A. Woman’. According to band member Robby Krieger, it was inspired by the song (Ghost) Riders in the Sky: A Cowboy Legend. The song is played in the E Dorian mode, and incorporates real sound effects of thunder and rain, along with Ray Manzareks Fender Rhodes electric piano playing, which emulates the sound of rain. The song reached #14 on the Billboard’s Hot 100. https://youtube/watch?v=DED812HKWyM
