Continuing with my fascination with MASCARA Tables, here is another one... Mascara Altar Table 17th Century Filipino, Pampanga Province Tindalo Wood. A two-drawer type altar table [mesa altar] made of Tindalo. The top is a floating wooden central panel anchored by mitered edges. The two drawers are simply carved with no ornamentation. The drawers, however, sit on four cabriolet legs with faces of grotesques (the mask or mascara) carved on the knees. The legs terminate on padded lions paw feet resting on squashed buns. The altar able is supported by four (4) stretchers that stand on modified ogee feet. Signs of extreme age, weathering and shrinkage most evident on the surface of the top central panel. The drawer faces may be a later replacement but I am not sure. The wood does not look as faded as the rest of the table. The pulls may not be originals well. These pictures came to me via a most reputable dealer. He was offering it for an then exorbitant sum. But at the current auctions sales results show, the asking price may now be a bargain!
