Contrary to the council’s earlier assertion that the shortage of housing was caused by people arriving in Westminster and expecting to be housed, Mr Taylor said: “People that are making applications are people that were living in Westminster before. People that have a local connection to the area. Often they are single parents that don’t feel like they can work because they have young children; it’s obviously very difficult to work if you have a large family and young children.” Legal charity Zacchaeus 2000 Trust, or Z2K for short, is well known among families hit by the benefit cap. Their patron, broadcaster Sandi Toksvig, said their workload had “increased dramatically” over the last few years due to welfare reforms, adding: “Forcing lower-income groups out of London will have a huge impact on the city’s economic and cultural diversity.” Joanna Kennedy, chief executive of the charity, said: “Z2K is extremely concerned that so many Westminster families and vulnerable single people are being placed in temporary accommodation so far from the family support networks they rely on. This is especially unfair on young children, uprooted from their school and friends. “The government’s caps on housing benefit lie at the root of this problem and so we urge newly-elected councillors to listen to the problems facing these families and take up their case with ministers to end this unfair policy.” From the article Posted by Greg Oke
