Contribution to the Community Gbah Town en-route to Matambo Estate in Liberia As a responsible plantation company and a founding member of the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO), Sime Darby Plantation is concerned with the welfare of communities in areas where it has operations. ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT AND PROSPERITY Sime Darby Plantation’s presence has not only generated economic activities for the communities in which it operates the company also initiates development and improvement of infrastructure and amenities. Sime Darby Plantation ensures local communities benefit from employment opportunities created through the development of estates and supporting facilities including mills, offices, plants and R&D centres, among many others. In Indonesia, we employ more than 39,000 workers and our plantations across Indonesia have created jobs for communities neighbouring our operations. This has helped increase economic development in these areas. Once fully operational, SDPL will employ about 35,000 people to be estate managers and assistant managers, supervisors, harvesters and general workers. Most of these positions are expected to be filled by Liberians. SDPL’s presence in Liberia has not only generated economic activities for the communities, the company also initiates development and improves infrastructure and amenities. So far, more than 120 teachers have been employed to manage over 4,500 students in 16 schools, who are children of employees and members of communities living in the vicinity of SDPL estates. In the more remote areas, roads have been constructed to create a safer and more tenable route for the community. Sime Darby Plantation also provides buses for schoolchildren to ensure their safety, and improve accessibility especially for those who had to walk a few kilometers to school. Upon completion of the Matambo estate in Liberia, the company will have constructed two bridges, 50 underpasses and 67.5 km of roads. In Liberia, Sime Darby Plantation oversaw the building of day care centres, community halls, and the repairing and resuscitation of a traders’ market. In addition to the 15 feeder schools and 1 central school refurbished to date, Sime Darby Plantation (Liberia) Inc. has also employed teachers for these schools. The company has also taken the initiative to supply approximately 4000 chairs and desks, text books for various levels, stationery for the teachers and students and furnishing the library at Central School with books, computers and a generator. Sime Darby Plantation has built several educational facilities , healthcare centres, houses of worship and schools around its estates across Sumatera, Kalimantan and Sulawesi in Indonesia. The company has also helped the Indonesian government build 16.5km of roads and a bridge in Kotabaru, Kalimantan. In Malaysia, Sime Darby Plantation collaborated with the Humana Child Aid Society Sabah to provide formal education to children of migrant workers residing in its estates. The company funded the construction and establishment of a number of Humana learning centres as well as the enrolment of school children, management of the teachers and school facilities. Sime Darby Plantation also bears the cost of utilities in several remote locations and provides accommodation for teachers. The medical facilities at Sime Darby Plantation estates not only provide doctors, medical assistants, medical treatment and advice to its employees and their family members, but also serves the community in the surrounding areas. In Liberia, the company established a hospital with separate male and female wards, a fully stocked dispensary and developed awareness programmes on hygiene and various diseases. PHILANTHROPY Contribution of 17 bicycles for the students of Sekolah Kebangsaan Rompin - children were often absent from school because of the long and arduous journey to class, but since they were given the bicycles, attendance in class has improved. Besides having donation drives, Sime Darby Plantation also organises sporting events such as football and badminton matches that helps to create a friendly environment.
