Cont’d Devotional Truth: A WORD TO ALL MARRIED MEN AND TO-BES (Ephesians 5:28-29) We said that the two basic needs of a woman in marriage is Love and Protection or Security. Everything is tied to these two. We are talking about Agape love of course; the love infused in us by the Holy Ghost. Love is everything indeed. Anything done without love is insincere or shallow. Unfortunately or surprisingly, some men replace love for their wives with hatred or bitterness. The below text instructs men to hate their wives. I believe a woman can hate her husband too, but the man is stressed here. The below scriptures show this great evil which I have put in capital letters. Let’s read. In Colossians 3:19, “Husbands, love your wives and be not BITTER against them”. So there is a possibility that in the process of time a husband can begin to develop bitterness against his wife. How sad? Let’s look at the next text. The scripture says in Ephesians 5:28 “So ought men to love their wives as their own bodies. He that loves his wife loves himself.” Verse 29 “For no man ever HATED his own flesh; but nourishes and cherishes it, even as the Lord the Church”. Why or how does such hatred develop which should not ever be the case. For instance, a man could begin developing hatred for his wife maybe she has not brought forth a child. Or generally speaking, a man could become hateful and bitter perhaps because his ‘expectations’, whatever there are, are not met. Whatever the case, men are under oath or a vow to love their wives. Why should one pronounce, declare or vow to love a woman and in the twinkle of an eye develops hatred or bitterness. Maybe unreasonable expectations, or an attempt to change the woman or impose our will upon them. Whatever the issue, God wants us to love our wives and we must in obedience do exactly that and quit finding faults and excuses. This is why we must be prayerful and decisive in our choices so that at the end of the day we will not cast blame on the devil, others, the woman or God, like Adam.
