Conversation between a Skeptic and Sakyamuni Buddha Skeptic : What is the use of meditation? Buddha : Well, I may have not gained anything but I have lost a lot ! I have lost anger, depression, ill-health, fear of old age and fear of death. So, now, you decide if you want to meditate or not. This was only a brief dialogue between a skeptic and Sakyamuni Buddha. For those Buddhist senior citizens, meditation means a lot to them in relation to old-age problems like poor health, sickness, loneliness, and fear of physical or mental disabilities and so on. That the said that he might have gained nothing from meditation was his sense of absolute humility as a Tathagata. He was only humble about what he had gained from 7 years of intensive meditation under a bodhi tree at Bodhgaya in ancient India about 2,600 years ago. What he had gained was tremendous of course. He did not to converse about them as they are beyond the comprehension of the ordinary Buddhist devotees except his immediate and foremost disciples like Ven. Sariputta, Ven. Ananda, Ven. Kaccayana and so forth.
