Convict Leasing It took time for the system of Convict Leasing to develop. It took time for the state to realize that prisoners could be a source of profit. The state of Alabama earned $14,000 in its first year of Convict Leasing in 1874. By 1890, revenue was 164,000, roughly 4.1 million dollars today. By then, states throughout the south and hundreds of counties and cities were engaged in some form of Leasing Convicts to private industry. It gave tremendous discretionary power for the private owner, (a land owner, corporation, coal miner, or any business concern), to do what they wanted with African Americans.
