Copy of a letter written in the SMH yesterday 28/07/2014 Specialist womens services are best Rachel Browne and Anne Summers are to be congratulated for continuing to shine the spotlight on the NSW government’s Going Home, Staying Home homelessness reforms, which will see the closure of many specialist women’s services and refuges across NSW (‘‘Specialists fired as women’s refuges forced to shed staff’’, ‘‘Fresh struggle to save womens services’’, June 28). These are services run by women, for women, providing shelter, hope and a genuine future for girls, women and children escaping domestic and family violence, neglect and abuse. The NSW government tells us that after 30 years it’s time for a change. With all due respect to the government, and the large faith-based charities which have been the outright winners in this multi-million-dollar tender process, I’d rather think that if my girls needed help they could go to a local service, run by experienced, caring and committed women whose main motivation is their health and welfare, not to a satellite of a corporatised organisation, which is brilliant at writing tenders for funding, but doesn’t have the same hands-on experience in this field. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it, Premier. The Ides of March approach. Jackie Campisi Watsons Bay
