Bayford Meadows Race Report 25/5/14 R3 2014 Kent Kart Championship – R3 Bayford Meadows Summer Championship The third round of the popular Kent Kart Championship took place at Bayford Meadows on Sunday 25th May. The six round championship alternates between Bayford and Buckmore Park throughout the summer. The kart traders in the South East have really got behind the championship and an impressive array of prizes are on offer to the winners. Each round also has a tyre draw for each class; this would not have been possible without the generous support of JAG, Anderson, Project One and the Kart Store at Buckmore Park. The highlight of the morning’s proceedings were the Bambino timed sessions; all ten youngsters present performed impeccably. Tristan Thorpe achieved the fastest total time from the two sessions and also set a new lap record at 62.4. Jack Page was the runner up and Luke Hilton was in third place. A dramatic Honda Cadet Grand Final saw Luke Whitehead race from grid thirteen to take the win. Luke hit the front with just one lap remaining and was a delighted winner at the flag. The other podium places were also in doubt until the final corner as Alfie Glenie finished as runner up and Harrison Blake claimed third position. The Minimax Grand Final came down to a straight fight between Tyler Sullivan and Charlie Bennett. Tyler held the smallest of advantages throughout the majority of the final, only being ahead once midway during the 12 lap final. The pair were separated by just two-tenths of a second at the chequered flag, both recorded an identical fastest lap. Oliver Appleby had his best result of the current campaign with a strong third place. The Honda Clubman grid was the largest of the day and provided another exciting Grand Final race. Rhys Anthony and George Leeves had a massive race long battle. Unfortunately the two pace setters came together at the final corner and both lost momentum which allowed Oliver Bennett, who had sat in the wheel tracks of the leaders throughout the race, to nip past to take the spoils. George recovered to take the runner’s up spot just ahead of Rhys. Alfie Prince took fourth place, Bradley Hardy fifth and Samuel Heading rounded off the top 6. The Junior Subaru drivers provided an interesting and sometimes chaotic Grand Final. Harry Carter lead from lights to flag, but with impressive novice driver Nathan Jeffrey on his back bumper for the duration of the final Harry had no time to relax. Jake Paice won the battle for the final podium spot in third place as he headed the train of eight karts that included Andy Spencer, Antonio Segona, Chandler Horsefield, James Freeman and Charlie Nash. Three drivers dominated the Junior Rotax encounter. Charlie Oliver had an early advantage before he was displaced by Jonathan Wilkes. By mid- race, Jonathan came under pressure and was passed by Will Heasman who went on to take the win. Jonathan finished second around a second behind from Charlie. Liam Carter was classified as fourth. It was great to see a good size grid of Senior Rotax drivers including a number of 177kg drivers, but, frankly the standard of some of the driving was at best questionable. The start of the Grand Final was more akin to a Nascar ‘big one’ at Daytona with several karts flying in all directions. Cameron Clarke was clear of all the mayhem and recorded a comfortable seven second win from Steve Crow and Darren Bartlett. Ian Ward
