Coriolanus Saw the National Theatre Live broadcast of ‘Coriolanus’ in a theatre in Bath, the other day. I thought the tickets were expensive until I heard that the tickets for the Donmar Warehouse had sold out within an hour and that returns are selling for £1000 a ticket. I liked the minimalist stage set, and the way the Romans and the Volscians were distinguished by a northern English accent. I heard Yorkshiremen. Found the first half too shouty. Could hardly hear the poetry and there is poetry there: Martius: ….. ‘He that trusts to you, Where he should find you lions finds you hares, Where foxes, geese you are – no surer, no, Than is the coal of fire upon the ice, Or hailstone in the sun…’ The second half of the play I found very moving, in particular the wife, Virgilia, whom Coriolanus refers to as ‘my gracious silence’ and the mother, Volumnia, whose words get into Coriolanus’ heart and disarm him, so that he becomes Aufidius’ victim.
