Corona Extra Pro Surf Circuit Champs in Puerto Rico will receive a bonus! The 26th Edition of the Corona Extra Pro Surf Circuit will take place November 22 and 23 at Middles Beach in Isabela, P.R. This event will decide the circuit champions for both the Mens and Womens divisions. “Corona has just notified me that Coppertone Sunscreen Lotion will award the 2014 champion of each division with a $1,000 bonus” said Event Director Werner Vega. “This will be the first time we have awarded extra prize money to the circuit champs. From now on, we will try to continue this tradition and we aim to improve this award in the future”. The race for the season title is comprised of the total points that the competitors collect in three events. The current leader of the Mens title race is Gabriel Escudero, who has a total of 3255 points for the season, after winning the last event at Domes in March and placing second at Middles last October. However, several of his competitors are still in striking range, notably Wesley Toth in second place, who is less than a thousand points behind. Wesley won the last event at Middles in a close final over Gabriel. Also still in the running are Toths older brother Brian, and Alejandro Moreda. Cody Thompson, from Jacksonville, is the highest rated Mainland competitor at equal third. On the Womens side of the draw, Chelsea Tuach, from Barbados, holds a very slim lead over Mainland competitors Nikki Viesins and Alexis Engstrom. Also still in the running are P.R. locals Amy Murphree and Idalis Alvarado. Tuach was the winner of last Octobers event at Middles, and the Womens final at Domes was won by Quincy Davis, who splits her year between P.R. and Montauk, N.Y. The original dates for the contest were October 25 and 26. However, Event Director Vega, who monitors the island surf forecasts carefully, decided to postpone until November due to the swell predictions. As it turned out, the conditions at Middles last weekend, on the original dates offered poor conditions for competition. “They were not the type of conditions in which we wanted to select our champions”, said Vega. “We are confident that the waves will be better on the new dates in November. In our sport, “Mother Nature” controls our playing field, and we want the competitors and spectators to enjoy the quality of surf that Puerto Rico is famous for.” There will be a $25,000 total prize purse for the Mens event and $12,000 awarded to the Women. Entries will remain open, the new entry deadlines are as follows: All entries should be received with payment no later than Wednesday, November 12, 2014. After Wednesday, November 12 a late entry fee of $35.00 will be charged. Entry deadline is Saturday, November 15, 2014 at 4:00 PM. Entries will not be accepted after Saturday, November 15, 2014 at 4:00 PM. You can register online apspr.net/13/ (Registration) if you have a Pay Pal account. Competitors can download an entry form from apspr.net/13/ and mail it with payment to APSPR or deliver it at Hang Loose Surf Shop from 10:00am – 4:00pm, or register in person at Hang Loose Surf Shop in Isabela. For more information, call (787) 560-0181 from 10:00am – 4:00pm. You must be an active APSPR member to enter this event. If you are not a member, you must pay your membership fee to register for this event. Pro surfers from around the Caribbean as well as the Mainland always look forward to competing at the iconic reef break at Middles, which produces some of the best tube riding conditions on the island. Pro surfing fans will remember Middles as the spot where Kelly Slater claimed his 10th ASP world title in beautiful barrels there in 2010. Although Slater will not be competing there next month, the competitors on hand will be looking for similar hollow conditions in pursuit of the Corona Extra Crown. The Corona Extra Pro Surf Circuit, was founded in 2001 by Werner Vega, surfboard shaper and owner of Hang Loose Surf Shop, in Isabela. “Since we began thirteen years ago Corona Extra has been the biggest supporter of Puerto Rican pro surfers” said Mr. Vega. “The continued support of Corona Extra shows a huge commitment to the sport and it’s athletes. The contest will have a total purse of $37,000, which means that we will be able to pay the winner of the Men a first prize of $10,000. The winner of the Women’s will receive $5,000”. Surfing fans who are unable to attend in person at Isabela that weekend will once again have the opportunity to follow the action online with the popular “Heats on Demand” feature. “They will have access to every scoring ride of the event”, said APSPR Event Coordinator, Viviannee Vega. “On our website < apspr.net > you can scan the draw, and select which heat you would like to watch, and much more.” Each scoring ride is shown, along with the points earned for that wave, through the technology of the Beach Byte computer scoring system. All of that scoring information is then available on the APSPR website to anyone with access to a modem. The other generous sponsors of the Corona Extra Pro Circuit are: Corona Extra, Corona Light, Puerto Rico Tourism Company, AT&T, Coppertone, Jose Cuervo, Cabreiroá, Finlandia, Hang Loose Surf Shop, Werner Vega Surfboards, Mangos, El Nuevo Día, Wapa Tv, N- Punto, Alfa Rock and Mundo Rad.
