Corporate control of our governments is central to the threat to First Nations treaty rights and is the force which tries to ram tarsands, pipelines and tankers on us while suppressing science and alternatives. The Canada-China FIPPA was drafted to give foreign investors extraordinary privileges unavailable to any Canadian citizen, investor, business or government powers to interfere with legislation at any level: municipal, civic, regional, provincial, federal and First Nations. Through State Owned Enterprises like CNOOC, the investor would be the ruthless government of China. The signed FIPPA is a treaty which tramples on existing treaties, and could be ratified any day except for the outstanding appeal by the Hupacasath of Vancouver Island. CC FIPPA, CETA and TPP all contain investor/state arbitration clauses which are extremely corrosive to our notion of democracy. 20 years of NAFTA has shown corporate privilege agreements to be catastrophic for the majority in all 3 countries while bolstering the power of companies like Monsanto to influence regulation. So many reasons to resist- We beat MAI in the 90s and stalled CC FIPPA in 2012: We can defeat these corporate rights bills and reign in our runaway governments. Our court challenge to FIPA is moving forward to the Court of Appeal and our argument will most likely be heard by late Spring. It is so good to see that the Comox chapter of the Council of Canadians is going to raise awareness on the 31st. On behalf of Hupacasath, thank you for doing this important work. Should we win at Court of Appeal, it is our hope that the decision will set a precedent for the TPP and CETA that also affect our constitutional rights. It is a critical time for people to assert their personal sovereignty and say NO. If we dont then our rights will continue to be taken away from us.
