Cosby is right, but I would extend this to EVERY kid (and their parents), not just minorities (this was from a speech in 2004). Parenting has gone out the window. Also, I COMPLETELY agree with him about the term African-American: It has become a tool to keep people apart. Unless you are from Africa, or a first-generation descendent of such, you are simply an American. No one does this to Anglos: Theyre just whites, unless they are literally a new citizen to the US or a first-gen descendent. How many times do you hear people refer to folks like William F. Nolan (100% Irish ancestry) as an Irish-American? NEVER. Hes an American, and thats it. Were all Americans, and thats that. I will say the term Native American is OK, as its a descriptor, not a hyphenated way to segregate people, and is preferable to Indian which is a misnomer.
