Modern diets are relatively soft and it has been suggested that this has lead to a reduction in muscle strength (Kiliaridis and Kalebo 1991). Look back at Figure I/4 which showed a 12-year-old girl who suffered from muscular dystrophy, compared with the average profile for her age. Her maxilla appears to have collapsed downwards, possibly under the force of gravity and drag from the ‘Soft Tissue Mask’ (Solow and Kreiborg 1977) to create a horrendous skeletal malocclusion. 2/ Open-Mouth Postures. The term ‘Mouth breather’ can be misleading because Vig and his co-workers (1981) showed that many individuals who keep their mouths open, continue to breathe nasally. Fratto (et al 1999) suggested, “Mouth breathing may be due to acquired habits following previous rhino-pharyngeal obstruction”. 3/ Tongue between Tooth Swallows and Para-function. Edward Angle (1907) writing about the habit of resting the tongue between the incisors, said: “… there are as many variations as there are cases met with, resulting and corresponding with variations in the malocclusion”.
