Council Worker Discovered Injured Cyclist A Hauraki District Council worker clearing rubbish bins behind the netball courts on Kenny Street was shocked to discover a man in his fifties lying upside down with his bike in a slump hole on the edge of Morgan Park at about 4.15 am yesterday morning. The discovery was made when the council worker went to investigate why a dog was acting strangely. The injured man was very cold after spending the night in the slump hole because he was unable to move. Luckily the council worker recognised that the man was badly hurt and called an ambulance rather than moving him. The cyclist was suffering from hypothermia, had serious injuries and St John Ambulance staff called the Westpac Helicopter to take him to hospital. The helicopter ended up having to land at Paeroa because of fog, according to a St John spokesperson. Slumps that have occurred in the same area in the past have been blamed on a former rubbish tip which was filled in. Investigations are continuing.
