Countries like Syria ; Iraq ; Lebanon ; southern Turkey; Jordan are fabrications , the product of The Sykes-Picot agreement of 1916 to divine up the debris of the Ottoman Empire. Those historical arrangements are now under threat and the Sunni uprising in Iraq is the start of this process of unravelling. Next will be Kurdistan. Iraq could break up and join with Iran and so on. Those with a narrow conspiratorial and paranoid mindset will probably regard this as some kind of American plan to balkanise the region. What is happening is not the product of puppet masters, it the consequence of historical arrangements; changing tribal loyalties; religious schisms; economic growth all breaking apart the region . The process is bound to be bloody and extreme; with loyalties changing frequently and suddenly.
