Country Garden, one of China’s largest property developers, has chosen Malaysia as the first stop in its global expansion plan, with a mixed-use waterfront estate currently under construction in Iskandar, which is popular with Singaporeans. Its RM18 billion (S$7 billion) Danga Bay project, scheduled for launch on Sunday, is set to mirror the company’s success in developing suburban projects in Chinese cities. “Country Garden’s strategy has always been to develop mixed-use suburban projects that are well connected to a city centre,” the group’s general manager for Strategic Development Luo Jingrong said in Guangzhou. “For the same reason, we chose Johor Baru for our first overseas project. We want to leverage on Iskandar, Malaysia’s future growth, as well as its connectivity with Singapore, which is a metropolis with a huge economy.”
