Courage Above All Courage is not simply one of the virtues, - TopicsExpress

Courage Above All Courage is not simply one of the virtues, wrote C.S. Lewis, but the form of every virtue at the testing point, which means, at the point of highest reality. Courage is the willingness to hold to all of the other virtues--love, mercy, honesty, faithfulness---even when there is danger or personal risk. Pilate was merciful, said Lewis, till it became risky. Courage will always be the cornerstone of all Christian virtues because courage makes all the others possible. Courage makes sure that a Christian is not just a fair-weather friend but a faithful servant regardless of the consequences. Its difficult to overestimate the value of courage in the Christian life. . . .Sometimes courage is doing what you believe is the wise or loving thing, even when it is quiet or subtle or behind the scenes, even when others call you a coward for not joining them on the street corner. True courage resists the fear of being thought a coward and seeks to communicate out of love and justice. Sometimes, courage is not telling the unbeliever everything he needs to hear; sometimes, its telling him only what he can bear. -- Finding Common Ground, Tim Downs, 45.
