Courtesy Prasoon Kumar : Is Varanasi really a safe seat? BJP lost Varanasi to Congress in 2004. In 2009, MM Joshi won by a narrow margin of 16 thousand votes. Then, how is Varanasi not like any other regular constituency? If Varanasi today feels like a safe seat, it is because there is a perception that Modi cant be beaten in Varanasi, but that is Modis doing, not because of virtue of the place itself. Ananth Kumar has been a 5 time MP from Bangalore South. How is Bangalore South not a safe seat? There are several other seats where BJP has been incumbent for a long long time. And we are thinking of Varanasi as safe, where BJP lost recently!! Reason for Modi from Varanasi is very clear, it is to intensify the wave in the eastern UP and Bihar at the same time. Western UP is more difficult because of a different demography. This is just a good strategy to contest your important man from Varanasi. But what is wrong with in picking a safe seat anyway? Modi is going to give you 199 other seats because of his persona and aggressive campaigning, then why cant he pick a safe seat as the 200th one? And that safe seat in my opinion is going to be a seat from Gujarat, some seat like Ahmedabad East. Kejriwal is new in the game, and has nothing to lose. He can afford to go down fighting from Varanasi because politics is a joke for him. But Modi is a man who is fighting for the country and with full responsibility. Then, why risk a personal loss in the situation where all opposition parties can come together and go to any extent to defeat Modi in his constituency.
