Coverage of the side event I moderated yesterday on climate and forests. At the end of the forum, I summarized the presentations and discussions with three words: success, challenge, context. (1) Success - REDD+ is getting some traction on the ground because of concrete programs that are being implemented in various parts of the world. Its important to pursue these efforts so we can learn by doing. (2) Challenges - there are still many issues and concerns to still deal with, especially on safeguards and non-carbon benefits. Tenure is very important and securing the rights of communities and indigenous peoples is critical. (3) Context - we must make sure that the lessons from the ground inform the negotiations here in Warsaw and beyond. But even beyond the negotiation context is the real world context where if we fail in an effective global response to climate change, what happened in the Philippines last week in Haiyan will become more frequent and the norm. I ended with an appeal for support for the Philippine delegation, and especially for Yeb Sano who is voluntarily fasting to secure a just outcome
