Craziest subway encounter of 2014 /possibly ever. This is an approximate version of what just happened. True story. --- I get on the 1 train with my my bass. Person sitting next to me (sharply dressed man in his forties maybe?) looks at me, looks at the bass and smiles. I smile back. What do you call this instrument? Bass, upright Bass Wow, you gotta love that thing if you carry it around all the time like that! I really love it! Do you play these things in an orchestra or what? Yeah, but I play mostly Jazz Oh I love Jazz! You know Kenny G? Hes great. He plays with Michael Bolton sometimes I smile awkwardly to avoid offending his taste. Oh I dont know his music very well actually So what kind of Jazz do you like? I name artists he might know Duke Ellington,Miles Davis,John Coltrane? Duke who? Who are these people? I dont know them.How about Chuck Mangione, you like him? Hes amazing! He keeps naming super lame stuff for several more minutes as I pretend to not know it or not hate it, and I keep naming well-known artists hes never heard of, until we reach an awkward silence. I am staring into space. this is depressing. Suddenly he says What about Scott Lafaro? Charlie Haden? Christian Mcbride? Wait wait what?? (Before I get a chance to reply, an older man sitting across yells at us: I smoked a joint with Charles Mingus in 1975!!!) Wait who are you?? He ignores my question. You ever listen to the Plugged Nickel session? Or My funny Valentine? Yeah like a million times!! I am kinda scared this point. You like Wynton Marsalis? Yeah hes amazing! Who are you?!? Oh Im nobody. You know Wyntons album Black codes? Sure!... Whos the band on that album? Ehh... I think Tain, Branford, Kenny Kirkland and Bob Hurst? Oh I think its actually Charnett Moffett on bass. You know that guy? Bob Hurst is great too though Of course, hes killing! Wait a minute! Who are you?! He ignores me and talks to the older guy sitting across for a few minutes. Where are you playing? I wanna come to your gig I name a few upcoming dates, and then it dawns on me. I had never seen Charnett live but you kinda look like the picture if I remember correctly.. Oh really? Thats interesting He gets off the train at the following stop. I google Charnett Moffett as the 1 train goes above ground. Its him. I love New York.
