Crazy how time goes by as fast as it does. On this day, 25 years ago my Pal Phred Jackson took Michael Gomez and me to the SF Peli-con where I met Rob Liefeld for the first time. I was doing the Comics Review 4 U public access show and I went to tape an actual portfolio review by real pros. Erik Larsen , Darick Robertson, and Rob Liefeld were all there. Rob was a nice guy and out of all of the portfolio reviews, gave the most constructive and thoughtful one. My buddy Mike bought a Stryfe sketch from Rob that he had done on personal stationary. It had his address and phone number on it! Over the next two years I bugged Rob (and a bunch of other pros like Mike Michael J Zeck, John Byrne, Arthur Adams, Carl Potts , Todd Todd McFarlane, Jack Kirby, and Erik Larsen) to get any advice and comic news I could. SDCC 1991 Rob told me about his new company McLarfeld. (This ended up becoming Image comics) I also met Marat Mychaels who was Robs assistant at the time. In Feb 1992 I was hired by Rob to work at the newly formed Extreme Studios. Despite the history that I have with Rob (some of which was skillfully documented by the mega talented Ed Ed Piskor in Hip Hop Family Tree) I am still very grateful for the chance he took on me and for the brief kindness he gave 25 years ago. Rob is not the Devil. Hes a human who made classic mistakes that narcism and hubris lead to. All understandable and forgivable. I would not be who I am today without the good and the bad that I experienced. I am grateful to the Extreme.
