Creating a Permanent Circle by Skye Alexander If you have room, you might enjoy creating a permanent circle, either inside your home or outdoors. You could incorporate a circle into a garden, perhaps designing a grassy area surrounded by shrubs or flowers. Consider marking the four directions with appropriate symbols and objects, as described earlier. Large standing stones erected at each of the four main compass points — maybe even a complete ring of stones — would nicely define your circle. Depending on the site, you might wish to place an altar in the center of your circle and perhaps include a spot to light ritual fires. To emphasize the elements, you could position a fire pit (or barbecue grill) in the south, a fountain or pond in the west, a large shrub or tree in the north, and a windmill or whirligig in the east. Inside your home, you may be able to turn an ordinary round rug into a magic circle. Place candleholders and flowers at each of the four directions. If you like, add other objects, artwork, or colors to symbolize the four elements. Use a cabinet, chest of drawers, table, or large trunk as an altar. The possibilities are limited only by your imagination. If a permanent circle isnt an option, consider cutting a circle from a large sheet of paper or fabric; you can store it in a closet when not in use. Decorate this portable circle with symbols and imagery to represent the four directions, along with other adornments that appeal to your aesthetic sensibility.
