Creature from the Haunted Sea You know I couldve been doing a lot tonight, I had plenty of options: I couldve watched an episode of Sherlock, I couldve rewatched a favorite Godzilla film of mine like Megaguirus or xMechagodzilla, I couldve continued my current watching of Gundam the 08 MS team, I couldve sacked up and started writing that story I wanted to do, photoshopping shit, makin memes, etc. but I decided to watch a film hailed by many of my friends as a true peice of cinematic shiet, but how did I think of it, lets dive in... Now if youve never heard of this film, chances are you mightve seen it if youre familiar with the animal planet show The Most Extreme. In two episodes of the show, I believe the one about Human Killers and Monster Myths, there was stock footage of a captain going In to kiss a woman at sea, but he woman is grabbed by this big eyes, seaweed covered monster. Now, The Most Extreme ,thanks to its music and sound effects, can make anything Look creepy or interesting, this being no excpetion, but how is the actual film? The basic plot as I can follow is this American spy is infiltrating some operation run by a gangster crew who take a Cuban military force and the treasure they carry seeking asylum somewhere, or something. Among this motley crew are some lady who the hero tries hard to win over (dont see why, shes not much to write home about. Even with her Badly dubbed singing voice), some guy who can immitate animal noises, the ladys sister, and our overbearing narrated of a protagonist. Our lead gangster guy wants to bump off the soldiers and make it appear to be done by a monster in order to make off with the treasure, little do they know that there is an actual monster roaming the area. The best way I can sum this film up is its one of hose movies you get in those 50+movie collections you see inth bargain isle at walmart. Its not particularly well done, and in fact pretty poorly put together at that. There is literally a point where a line of dialogue and scene is repeated 5 seconds after it is first said, The monster makes scuba gear bubbles and you see the suit actors flipper, A scene of would be pirates goes nowhere, theres some guy in a suit who walks through the water tide zone deliberately to a phone booth for no reason, The protagonist talks to his i guess partner in code using monopoly terms, The animal noises dude falls in live with some random also animal imitating Latina woman on an island. Its just so strange. I cant even do it justice. The monster looks like, as Best summed up by my friend homer Simpson covered in sea weed. And yet all these actors play it totally straight (except for one scene which I swear an actor breaks character and laughs), which puts on a sort of charm to it. I miss that kind of earnestness in these films, I mean even if the plot seemed really ludicrous, and you can tell it was shot for like a day of footage, they do give it their all (even if Im convinced half these actors are either tourists or random ass people off the street). It really is a poorly done film, but it does keep you entertained, I guess, somewhat. I mean, honestly its low ranked even among classics like The Killer Shrews, bit its far from being the worst thing Ive seen. Hell, Im almost disappointed i didnt find it as horrible as many found it to be XD So overall, its not something Id really recommend, but I suppose it fits in among those z-films you marathon with friends and have a good time just putting it on while you make jokes and eat food. Overall, not as entertaining as Giant Gila Monster, but not the worst thing Ive seen. But in all honesty, youre probably better off watching those episodes of The Most Extreme, its alot more entertaining and actually decent in the creepy department. in fact Ill do that right now... Oh yeah, Roger Corman made this. I hope he crosses this over with Carnosaur one day... ~Jose
