So ah hear dat you go and tell people dat we doh have apples? Well, march right back and tell them of our custard apple, mammy apple, golden apple, sugar apple, star apple and pineapple. Then they might feel to suck some plum; offer them the yellow Chinese plum or the big Jamaican plum. Make sure you offer our good Trini friends some pomsetay before dem greedy manicou eat all. Remember to try ah piece ah zaboca and ah shebbo mango from ah tree in Morne Jaloux. You passing by Grand Anse? Please save some of the sea grapes for me. Hope to gobble a few in July. The ones that the sun burned a bit are my favorites. Those are the sweetest ones. And leave ah stone around so I can buss an orman—or two. Don’t eat all the damsels. Save me some governor plums. I might need some gospo to make some juice or to use as a cricket ball, as in days gone by. Gospo opens yuh appetite so that you can devour some fat pork or French cashews. If my blood pressure goes up, I hope to have some soursop juice. I will mix it with condensed milk and put it in the fridge to make blocks like Mammy Georgiana used to make. In case I can’t go off—mango might do the trick. Hell, if mango doesn’t work, I will grab some sandbox. Then I will prepare for the battle of Waterloo in the toilet! Coconut water is good for your daughter, but it’s good for you too. Dem fellers by Grand Anse Post Office sell them one for a dollar. Where are their coconut trees? I might even feel to try ah palmiste, like I did as a little boy. Little boys eat anything! Those palmiste trees ent playing they can grow tall, nah! Who knows? Palmiste might be good for something too. Perhaps dem doctors don’t even know dat. We have ah lot of citrus. A few of them like the one we called Jug Jug disappeared over the years. Make some lime juice and cut your nature if you are too hot. Then suck some grapefruit, orange with the green skin, or ah tangerine. You could even make orange peel tea with the orange skin. Then go back to the reliable gospo. The Lady in the Boat with the Yellow Petticoat, Mama Seaport! That is our fitting description for the mammy apple. Eat and enjoy a nice sugar apple like those in the pictures I am posting. Remember to watch out for the black “ants” if you intend to climb the sugar apple tree. The black ant love to parade the knobby coat of the sugar apple. Thank God for our many fruits. Anthony Wendell DeRiggs
