Crews plow Red and Purple Routes after the first significant snowfall November 10, 2014 1:42 PM (Red Deer, Alberta) Sanders, snow plow trucks, and graders are out for the first time this season after the first significant snowfall arrived this past weekend. At 8:30 a.m. Sunday morning, plowing was triggered for Purple Routes (hills, bridges, and overpasses) and Red Routes (arterials). Later in the day, plowing on Purple Routes was triggered for a second time. Crews are continuing to plow Red Routes through to this evening. Sanding crews continue to work 24 hours a day to sand Purple, Red, and Green Routes, as well as intersections in Grey Routes. Crews are also working on clearing sidewalks throughout the city. One of the biggest changes to the new snow and ice program is how residential plowing is done and when it begins. At 10cm snowpack (approximately 40cm of snowfall), plowing is triggered on Green and Grey Routes, which differs from previous years when residential plowing had no trigger and was discretionary. This snowfall was not enough to trigger a residential plow. For a chart on triggers for when we plow, please visit: reddeer.ca/city-services/roads/snow-and-ice-program/when-do-we-plow/.
