Crimea in a historical context This posting is not meant to justify Russias annexation of Crimea, but merely to explain it and demonstrate how American foreign policy blunders, mostly in the Clinton Administration, lead inevitably to the current situation. In 1991 we won the Cold War. Communism collapsed, The Soviet Union broke apart, and the Warsaw Pact disbanded. Instead of dissolving NATO (which was supposed to be a defensive Alliance), NATO expanded right up to the borders of the new Russia. In the mid 1990s America and NATO bombed what was left of Yugoslavia so that Bosnia could break off and be an independent country. Later we bombed the hell out of Serbia in support of Kosovos vote for self determination to secede from Serbia and either be an independent country or join Albania. Kosovo is now a NATO protectorate.. Today, instead of supporting Crimeas vote for self determination to leave Ukraine and join Russia, we condemn Russia and impose sanctions, and some even threaten war. Is there an inconsistency, double standard, and hypocrisy regarding self determination here ? Can you imagine how Americans would feel if we surrendered the Cold War, disbanded NATO, and the Soviet Union responded by expanding the Warsaw Pact to include most of Western Europe and Canada ? In 1991 we won the Cold War, and should have joined with Russia to fight the next great enemy, Islamic fanatic fundamentalism. Instead America continued to fight the Cold War, oppose Russia, Rabbani, and Massoud in Afghanistan, and support Pakistan and the Taliban. The result is the loss of 3000 American lives and two buildings in New York. By making a big deal out of Crimea now, which really should be none of our business, we repeat the same mistake.
