Critically Thinking Canadian The cleanup costs for Lac-Megantic is now estimated to stand at $200 million. With this staggering cost, oil and rail companies involved are now in the courts trying to transfer the monetary burden of the cleanup to Canadian taxpayers. Its quite interesting that the oil companies always claim that they will clean up the contamination in the oil sands once the oil runs out.....but they wont cleanup after Lac-Megantic, even though the contamination in Quebec is drastically smaller than those created in Alberta.
