Critics occasionally take issue with my analyses of Animal Rights and politics. They assert that empathy and compassion have nothing to do with politics, and that love for animals transcends political differences. On the individual level they are correct. Conservatives can have empathy for a seal or a whale being butchered, they may rescue a stray, they may deplore bullfighting. But on a policy level Conservatives are the enemies of animals. They worship pivate property and capitalism. Free enterprise is more dear to their hearts than are the victims of free enterprise. They support the right of people to own, to exploit, to enslave, and to kill animals. That Big Ag murders 50 billion animals per year is just business. That Big Pharma tortures laboratory animals is a necessary component of the pharmaceutical trade. That animals are imprisoned in zoos, circuses, aquatic parks, and exploited in dog and horse racing, and rodeos is just business. Conservatives: Supporters of Business, Enemies of Animals
