Critics playlist Rochester Democrat and Chronicle CATHERINE RUSSELL - BRING IT BACK. This is the latest from the talented singer who is a favorite of regulars at the Xerox Rochester International Jazz Festival (and she’s returning this year). The new disc has all the elements her fans have come to expect — the mix of influences that include blues divas like Bessie Smith, foot-tapping Old School jazzers (like her father, Luis Russell who once led Louis Armstrong’s orchestra), and modern chanteuses who had beauty and romance to our lives. Included are “I Let a Song Go Out of My Heart” from the Duke Ellington songbook, the bouncin’ bluesy title track “Bring It Back,” the Tin Pan Alley standard “I Cover the Waterfront,” her dad’s “Lucille,” a sassy “I’m Sticking With You Baby,” featuring a kicking gospel-styled Hammond B3 organ from Glenn Patscha and piano from Mark Shane. Good-natured sass and spunk are a major part of her appeal, along with well-schooled and often-lovely vocals. — JACK GARNER
